strawberry fields

Strawberry Fields is the memorial to John Lennon who was murdered across the street in front of the Dakota by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980. Designed by Bruce Kelly in shape of a tear drop, this 2.5 acre memorial serves two purposes. The first of course is to celebrate the life of John Lennon who while not perfect in his own life, preached a doctrine of peace and acceptance. The second purpose is to keep people away from the one and only entrance to the Dakota where Yoko Ono still lives and which crowds of tourists blocked the first few years after Lennon’s death. In 1985, Ono spent $500,000 to create the memorial and another $500,000 for its future upkeep.  The Imagine mosaic was a gift of the City of Naples in Italy.

United Nations
Plaque

Most people don’t pay much attention to the bronze plaque placed on a rock west of the famous Imagine Mosaic. The plaque commemorates a UN charter where over 100 countries embraced the ideas in John Lennon’s song “Imagine.” Read the list of countries for a surprise. Some countries don’t exist anymore like Yugoslavia. Others, went back on their pledge like Rwanda in 1994.
